The Benitia Family Center is a Catholic Christian Agency, sponsored by the Congregation of Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence. The Center facilitates the Educational, Emotional, and Spiritual growth of children, youth and families.
Mission: To value the dignity of all people by providing opportunities for personal development, growth and well being of families helping them become active and productive participants in their community.

Description:
The Center provides the following services on a sliding fee: Counseling: for children, youth and families who are experiencing emotional stress. Youth Program: providing a social skills program for children ages 8-13 who are exhibiting at-risk behaviors.
Education: providing GED, ESL, Citizenship Preparation, and Computer Literacy classes as well as GED Tutoring and Learn to Read Tutoring program for Adults. A Family Book Club is provided for children ages 5-8 and their parents to help nurture a love for reading.
Neighborhood Outreach and Development: helping residents reclaim their voice and power in the neighborhood, beautifying neighborhoods,leadership training for residents so as to develop a safer, beautiful and nurturing environment for our children.

Events include Spelling Bee in September and Theater Auction in April, National Night Out in August and Block walking and Garden and Neighborhood Clean Up on occasions that can be chosen by a group of individuals or groups.

History:
The Benitia Family Center, Inc., a non- profit 501(c)(3)Neighborhood Agency, is named in memory of Sister Benitia Vermeersch, CDP. Benitia Family Center, located in the Edgewood School District, was established in 1994. In 1995, the Center inherited the San Antonio Literacy Council, the oldest Adult Literacy Program in San Antonio, TX. Over 4,000 adults have participated in the education program since then. Over 1,800 families have received counseling; over 95 youth have developed skills to meet daily challenges, and over 300 residents in the neighborhood have come together to improve their neighborhood. The Center has been a recipient of several grants to include the Ford Salute to Education, The Charity Ball foundation, the David Robinson Foundation, the San Antonio Area Foundation and others.
