San Antonio Youth Literacy's "LET'S READ!" Program mission is to promote the literacy skills of San Antonio's at-risk youth.
Description:
Our organization, since its inception in 1984, understands that the inability to read impacts each and every aspect of a person's life. In order to be a successful and an effective citizen in today's society, a person must possess functional literacy skills. The "LET'S READ!" Program utilizes Volunteer Reading Tutors (VRT) to go on-site once a week and tutor elementary-aged children in over 25 schools and partner agencies. There are many factors that contribute to low performance in school. San Antonio Youth Literacy strives to ensure that illiteracy is not one of these factors. Volunteers provide students with reading practice, word recognition, and assist students in developing their self-esteem while fostering a love of reading.
History:
Founded in 1984 by Harriet Marmon-Helmle, San Antonio Youth Literacy developed a media-based literacy program for at-risk high school students. The program addressed illiteracy through the innovative medium of script writing and video production. Students researched and reported on community issues important to teens.
