Rebuilding Together is dedicated to keeping low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners living in warmth, safety, independence, dignity and decency through free home repair and rehabilitation using volunteer services.
Description:
Our work is performed once per year on a major workday which is held in October each year. A neighborhood is selected where all the homes are located close together and applications are given to the homeowners in that area. In October 2007 we will provide home repairs to homes in a selected neighborhood of San Antonio. Each year we gather volunteers from all walks of life, ages and ethnic backgrounds to join forces on our workday. Armed with truckloads of donated materials these volunteers paint, repair and renovate homes. Anyone can volunteer! Business executives, students, doctors, police, homemakers, bankers have all pitched in to help. We also encourage carpenters, plumbers roofers and people with other skills to donate their time and talent on our workday.
History:
Rebuilding Together San Antonio started in 1994 in our community. Since that time we have provided free repairs to over 350 homes, using over 12,000 volunteers, donating over 35,000 hours. We have done over l million dollars worth of home repairs. In 2004 we started an Year Round Minor Repair Program to provide immediate repairs for extreme need homeowners. On October 18, 2008 we will repair homes in City Council District 5 with the help of over 800 volunteers.
