The mission of our non-profit ecumenical agency is to help qualified senior citizens live independently in their own homes with dignity and quality of life. Our volunteers escort clients to medical appointments, deliver groceries to the client's home, provide telephone reassurance, perform minor repairs and maintenance and work in our office as transportation schedulers and office assistance. Services are free of charge to the clients.
Description:
Northeast Senior Assistance (NESA) is a vital agency that gives homebound elderly in the northeast community the opportunity to remain independent and live with dignity as long as they are able to do so. NESA relies on contributions from supporting congregations, grants, trusts, friends and clients for financial support. NESA volunteers are the heart of the agency, because without qualified volunteers the agency could not exist. Volunteers must be willing to submit an application, be interviewed, receive background and driver's license checks, and participate in training appropriate to their volunteer positions. NESA volunteers and clients often form close interpersonal relationships that gives much needed social support to the homebound elderly who would not otherwise have the oportunity to relate on a one-to-one basis. Volunteers are trained on an ongoing basis and have access to NESA staff whenever performing volunteer duties. NESA volunteers do not transport people in wheelchairs. When a person volunteers with NESA, he/she becomes a vital and valued member of the NESA Family. If you or a friend would like the satisfaction of volunteering, or if you know someone in our area who may need our services, please call 967-6372.
History:
Northeast Senior Assistance (NESA) was founded in 1984 when a group of concerned citizens formed the organization. It is governed by a Board of Directors composed of sponsoring congregations, organizations, and other appointed community leaders. The NESA staff consists of an Executive Director, an Outreach Coordinator, a Volunteer Coordinator and a Program Assistant. NESA serves an area approximately 1/4 the size of San Antonio. The boundaries have grown consistently over 23 years of operation and are determined by congregational support and the Board of Directors. NESA provides support to 220 clients in the northeast San Antonio area. The mission of service to the elderly has remained the focus of the agency throughout its history. The history of NESA is a proud one with noble goals conceived, implemented and continued by a loyal Board of Govenors, a dedicated staff, and committed volunteers without whom NESA could not exist.
