Our agency is dedicated to combating illiteracy through offering English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, Spanish Adult Basic Education, General Education Development (GED) preparation, reading and writing, and citizenship. Services are free to adults ages 16 years and older.
Description:
The Center is in partnership with the San Antonio Independent School District, provides literacy and basic skills to adults, ensuring them the opportunity to acquire the basic skills necessary to function effectively and achieve the greatest possible opportunity in their work and in their lives. SAISD is responsible for curriculum development, and provision of teaching staff and materials. Classes are conducted in a computer-assisted, learner centered, holistic environment. Literacy Center staff also provides literacy awareness presentations to community organizations and through the media, participates in a variety of literacy related councils and committees, attends numerous other community organizations and performs extensive outreach, and coordinates events which involve various community organizations and resources. The Texas' Indicators of Program Quality (IPQ's) are observed and reflected in the performance measures in the areas that the city is responsible for. These areas are Recruitment, Retention, and Program Planning.
History:
Willie C. Velasquez Literacy Center is one of eight literacy centers operated by the City of San Antonio through a partnership with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). It opened its doors on September 12, 1994. The Center was named in honor of Mr. Willie C. Velasquez who was founder and charter member of the Mexican American Youth Organization and the first statewide coordinator of El Movimiento Social de la Raza Unida. He became founder and the first director of the Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC)in San Antonio and in 1974 founded the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and Southwest Voter Research Institute.
