San Antonio State School is a 24-hour residential facility, home to 300 individuals with mental retardation and other physical disabilities. The Council's mission is to support the State School through volunteerism, education and financial support.
Description:
SASS is one of 13 residential facilities operated by the State of Texas, which is one of many choices Texans can choose in an array of options. The facility offers comprehensive services meeting the needs of people with developmental disabilities, behavioral and psychiatric challenges and medical problems. Additionally, the school provides vocational training and physical management therapies. The 300 people who make the State School their home vary in age from 13 to 80 years old.
History:
As a result of parents' lobbying activities in Austin, the San Antonio State School has been in existence since March, 1978 when 60 people from the Austin SS were transferred here. SASS serves individuals in Bexar county and 8 of the surrounding counties. The term "school" persists because initially, there were children living here. Those children have grown up, and although we now have few youngsters here, the name has stuck.
