There are over 37,000 pediatric asthma cases in Bexar County. Asthma accounts for 10.1 million lost school days annually and is the highest ranked cause of pediatric hospitalizations in the U.S. On average, a child with asthma will miss one full week of school each year due to the disease. Smoking kills more than 430,000 Americans annually and COPD is the fourth leading cause of death each year. The organization is looking for volunteers to teach management skills, conduct presentations to parents or caregivers of children who have asthma, in-service training for school personnel, attend health fairs, speak to seniors and teens about the effects of smoking and living with COPD.

Attend volunteer orientation to become familiar with the American Lung Association mission and community initiatives.
