The Fig Tree is a a nonprofit, interfaith, ecumenical multimedia organization providing stories of faith in action in the Inland Northwest. It is a crucial alternative media voice, fostering communication and cooperative action among the congregations and agencies of the region.
Description:
The Fig Tree publishes a newspaper distributed to approximately 21,000 readers with stories covering the faith and nonprofit communities, telling of how people are working on solutions to today's issues as a way to live their values. Its website offers includes newspaper content and is expanding to the whole Northwest. A rural outreach program connects the issues of rural communities with those of their urban neighbors. Faith and nonprofit organizations often find their messages reshaped in mass media, rather than having their messages inspire others and change lives. The Fig Tree publishes the Directory of Congregations and Community Resources.
History:
The Fig Tree emerged as an outreach ministry of the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries, beginning in 1984 with publishing local stories of faith in action. The Fig Tree has expanded is now its own nonprofit organization with multimedia services and increased readership focusing on both the faith community and non-profit organizations.
