Description:
The American Red Cross touches millions of people every year; whether it's offering disaster and emergency relief, teaching lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid, or providing knowledge to the community so that they may prepare for and prevent disasters. Many lives have been saved and hearts have been touched by disaster relief volunteers. The variety of programs offered by the Red Cross help people become safer, healthier and more self-reliant. History:
In 1863 The Red Cross was founded at Geneva, Switzerland by Henry Dunant. Clara Barton founded The American Association of the Red Cross in Washington D.C. in 1881. Since then, people have turned to the American Red Cross for emergency services. Today, 1.2 million trained and dedicated American Red Cross volunteers, young and old, are helping their neighbors across the country every day. Although not a government agency, the American Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide special services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to disaster victims. American Red Cross workers assist our men and women in the Armed Forces and their families in emergencies. They are at the scene of more than 40,000 disasters a year, from house fires to devastating floods and tornadoes. They also teach their neighbors lifesaving skills in Red Cross CPR, first aid, water safety, and health courses. They work with sister Red Cross Societies around the world to help victims of natural and man-made calamities.
