The Second Harvest Inland Northwest (SHIN) is a private nonprofit organization that supports a network of agencies working to meet the basic food needs of people in our community.
Description:
The Second Harvest Inland Northwest is a non-profit organization which alleviates hunger and poverty by: providing food and related commodities and services to people in need; providing a system for the distribution of such commodities; educating the public about the nature of hunger and poverty; recognizing the need for emergency food programs and other non-profit organizations that meet the critical needs of low-income families; providing our services with compassion and respect for the dignity of the client.
History:
Since its incorporation in July 1972 as a central warehouse for Spokane food pantries, the SHIN has grown into a regional distribution site of the America's Second Harvest National Food Bank Network. Including 140 Spokane County agencies and programs, the SHIN supports more than 280 non-profit groups in the Inland Northwest. In 1998 additional distribution centers were opened in Yakima and the Tri-Cities region. Our warehouse in Spokane occupies 75,000 square feet, which houses an 81,000 cubic foot freezer/cooler and an automated repackaging line. The SHIN depends on all varieties of food-related donations: large, small, packaged, bulk, frozen, dry and refrigerated. Many individuals and organizations contribute to the efforts of the SHIN with their support, collaboration, services, supplies and funds. We appreciate all of them, and the thousands of volunteers who make it possible for us to achieve our goals.

Overall Experience
Very Satisfying Experience
 |
Positive experience directly helping folks on need. This was my first volunteer effort. Was a bit surprised that there was no "Thank You" or recognition from the organization at all for my small effort but then I remembered that so many of the people I helped distribute the food to said those words over and over. That is what made the experience so great. posted on September 2, 2005 |
Overall Experience
I would recommend SHFB volunteer activities to anyone.

Served as Secretary/Treasurer and on Personnel and Finance Committee. Participated in food drives and client surveys. Helped me understand budget processes better. Developed relationships with staff and other volunteers. All in all, it was a great experience!!! posted by ejubon on January 17, 2005 |
