To provide immediate refuge for children and support to strengthen families.
Description:
To provide immediate, short-term relief when there is concern that children may be injured or unsupervised due to family crisis. To offer parents support and parenting education toward the goal of having a positive long-term impact on their relationship with their children.
History:
In January 1982, a young child named Vanessa Behan died of injuries resulting from child abuse. The tragedy surrounding Vanessa's death was intensified by the fact that the alleged perpetrators, her parents, were acquitted because they would not testify against each other. In 1983 a group of committed business people founded the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. The Nursery opened in January 1987.
