The mission for the Corporation for National and Community Service is to provide opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to engage in service that addresses the nation's educational, public safety, environmental and other human needs to achieve direct and demonstrable results and to encourage all Americans to engage in such service. In doing so, the Corporation will foster civic responsibility, strengthen the ties that bind us together as a people, and provide educational opportunity for those who make a substantial commitment to service.

Description:
National Service promotes partnerships at all levels of society and builds bridges among seemingly disparate groups to improve the quality of life of people in our nation.

History:
The Corporation for National and Community Service is an agency with a demonstrated history of nonpartisanship. The concept began with the Peace Corps during the term of President John F. Kennedy. It grew to a domestic reality of AmeriCorps under the guidance and inspiration of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Volunteer Reflections    Post Your Own!

Overall Experience    Experience rating
One of the hardest and yet most rewarding experiences of my life, thus far.
I worked as an Americorps*VISTA for Panhandle Health District (Coeur d'Alene, ID) in their Tobacco Prevention and Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention programs. Our service area included the five northern counties of Idaho. For the first 3 or 4 months of my term of service I was overwelmed with the work and how much I didn't know. I really felt like there was no way I could do the things I was asked to do such as being a guest speaker at public schools, composing press releases, and working with businesses to develop smoke-free policies. However, I stuck with it and came out the other side a knowledgable, employable, confident person with $5000 to apply toward my final year of college. Even though I still have many things to learn in my current position, I now have the mindset that, in time, I can accomplish anything!
