Project MOVE is a one-on-one mentoring program, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest, supporting youth with disabilities as they transition from high school and start exploring their future goals.

Description:
Project MOVE youth are matched with caring adults who have a desire to share their work, college and life experiences in order to support and encourage exploration in the youth. The youth-mentor relationship is a place for the youth to discover his/her unique desires and skills and receive help in utilizing various resources and options within the local community. Mentoring with Project MOVE doesn't take special qualifications and the time commitment is minimal (4 hours a month). Research shows that mentoring can be a key factor in a youth's ability to build self-confidence, identify their interests and talents and make positive life choices for a successful future. Most of us had mentors at some time in our lives; perhaps an uncle, aunt, grandparent, coach, pastor, teacher or neighbor. That person may have said or done something positive for you, giving you the advice or support you needed at a crucial time in your life. Thank them and pass it on. Become a mentor today!

History:
Many Spokane youth with disabilities proceed with little direction after high school due to lack of community supports. Project MOVE was created to address this issue by evaluating the effectiveness of regular mentoring. Funded by a federal grant, Project MOVE is coordinated by Washington Initiative for Supported Employment, Community-Minded Enterprises, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest, and the University of Washington's Center for Disability Policy and Research.
