To assist low-income households in Clayton County in achieving and maintaining self-sufficiency free from social service subsidies.
Description:
Clayton Family Care is a Homeless Prevention program providing emergency assistance with housing (mortgage or rent), gas, water, and electric utilities, food, and prescription medicine.
History:
The program was begun in 1952 by a school principal and a PTA President who noticed increasing numbers of children attending school apparently poorly clothed and hungry. The agency became affiliated with United Way in the early 1960s. Over the years the agency has responded to natural disasters, fires, emerging crisis situations, and growing needs of the local community. The agency has played a leading role in response to Hurricane Katrina, the economic aftermath of September 11, 2001, the growing HIV/AIDS crisis in the mid 1990s, and other community needs.
