Meeting of the Hearts recruits and trains volunteers to mentor children (ages 4-18) who have one or both parents in the local or federal prison system. Through the program, mentors meet with a young person once a week, engaging them in positive and productive activities.
Description:
The Meeting of the Hearts mentoring program is administered by the DeKalb County Human Development Department. Interested volunteers complete an application, undergo a criminal background check and receive training to become a youth mentor. The program is funded by DeKalb County, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Youth Coordinating Counsel (CYCC).
History:
Meeting of the Hearts was established in January 2007. To date, more than 100 mentors have been recruited to work with DeKalb County youth, and the program is actively recruiting mentors for its second year of operation.
