The mission of Shepherd's Rest Ministries, Inc. is to aid victims of domestic violence in breaking the cycle of violence by encouraging growth and responsibility to help clients realize their personal worth and power to change the pattern of abuse.

Description:
Shepherd's Rest Ministries, Inc.is a family violence crisis center providing shelter and services to women and children who have been, or are at risk of being displaced from their homes due to family violence. Shepherd's Rest offers victims a 24-hour crisis line where clients can receive domestic violence counsel, direction, and resource referrals. Services include 24-hour emergency shelter, emergency transportation, food, clothing, resource referrals, in-house activities, and Legal Advocacy. We also provide limited financial assistance to the Paulding County community-at-large for those in need of rent or utility assistance. Shepherd's Rest also works to provide domestic violence community awareness, education, and training. We depend largely on individual, business, and church contributions, and of course, fundraisers, as income sources. Committed volunteers with a heart to help victims of domestic violence are needed in the areas of Legal Advocacy, donation pickup, fundraising, public awareness, etc...

History:
Shepherd's Rest was established in June of 1997 and has obtained full 501©3 tax-exempt status. Shepherd's Rest Battered Women's Shelter was birthed in the heart of Dr. Kathryn Melton, founder, years before its actual existence as she helplessly watched her sister live through years of abuse, ending in the death of her sister's husband. At the end of 1997, the Safe-House and Services for Battered Women and Children became a reality for Dr. Melton. With a handful of volunteers and $1700 raised through a benefit gospel singing, Dr. Melton rented an old house in Hiram, GA to serve victims of domestic violence. In August 2000, Shepherd's Rest purchased its own facility. Shepherd's Rest has served thousands of callers to its 24-hour crisis line and has housed almost 1,100 victims of domestic violence in the shelter in its 9 years of operation. In 1999, Dr. Melton was nominated and received the Eckerd 100 Woman of the Year Award for her spirit of volunteerism to her Paulding community. In June 2002, Shepherd's Rest began offering Legal Advocacy to victims of domestic violence in Paulding County. In October 2002, Dr. Melton was instrumental in reorganizing the dormant Paulding County Domestic Violence Task Force which now meets the third Friday of every month at the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce. She served as Chairman of the Task Force until July 2005.
