The first thing I noticed when I walked in to the Atlanta Children's Shelter was how clean, organized, and comforting my surroundings were. This is one of my first volunteering escapades, so I really didn't know what to expect. I had always thought of shelters as run down, dirty buildings with people in rags. I was so wrong. Over the week that I was there, I got close to a lot of the kids. They were so affectionate, and sweet, it was impossible not to become attatched. Everyday the children got a hot breakfast, and lunch. They also got check-ups often, I think. All in all it was wonderful to know that these kids, and many more, were being taken care of. The thing that really impressed me was that the shelter not only provided for the children, but for their parents as well. They gave them clothing to go on job interviews. Helped them with job interview tips, and making them resumes. They also gave free counseling. I was so amazed by all of the accomplishments this shelter has made, and I was honored to be able to help out. posted by bethanyfannin on June 26, 2005 |
