The Atlanta Community Food Bank fights hunger by engaging, educating and empowering our community.
Description:
The Food Bank distributes more than 23 million pounds to more than 750 community-based, nonprofit partner organizations. These partner agencies include food pantries, Head Start programs, childcare centers, nursing homes, Meals-on-Wheels, residential treatment centers, night shelters, community kitchens and other service programs. We rely on more than 15,000 volunteers every year to fulfill our mission. Our various projects offer fun and unique ways for individuals and groups of all kinds to contribute their time, talents and resources to connect with the community.
History:
The Food Bank began in 1979 as an emergency food provider in the basement of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta. Today the organization has become a fixture in the community with 125,000 square feet of warehouse space, distributing more than 14 million pounds of food each year. In addition to our core business of food distribution, the Food Bank has a number of projects that help build community including Atlanta's Table, Community Garden, Hunger 101, Hunger Walk/Run, Kids In Need, Product Rescue Center and The Atlanta Collaborative Kitchen (TACK).
