The mission of The Sullivan Center, Inc. is to provide help with dignity to families and individuals in crisis or at risk. We accomplish this by providing educational, financial, and referral resources to enable people to make choices that lead to increased self-sufficiency. Through example and collaboration, The Sullivan Center, Inc. is a leader in the movement to change the philosophies and practices of emergency assistance in Metropolitan Atlanta.
History:
The Sullivan Center has a long history associated with the Atlanta area. The Center originally began it's existence in 1960 when the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta launched a program of emergency assistance for the local area. Recognizing that Atlanta was experiencing growth in terms of both size and the need for assistance in 1983 Sister Marie N. Sullivan, O.P., was brought in from Kansas City to help and and joined the program as the Executive Director. The following year in 1984 the Center was separately incorporated as the Christian Emergency Help Centers. In 1985 the Center acted to put together and bring about the first ever coalition meeting involving direct assistance organizations to help and coordinate efforts. A milestone was reached in 1986 with the establishment of the Metropolitan Atlanta Clearing House or MACH, the first ever centralized computerized database for Atlanta Area Assistance Agencies and Organizations. In 1994 the Center went through it's present reincarnation when the board in recognition of the work done by Sister Sullivan renamed the organization The Sullivan Center to honor her. Today the Sullivan Center through the drive and leadership of Sister Sullivan During the past few years, we have further refined our mission, expanded our programs, strengthened the board of directors, and tripled the agency's budget. These efforts have made the agency a leader in the movement to help those who are in need. What sets The Sullivan Center apart from many other assistance providers is that we ask many of those in need who come to us to share in the responsibility of finding solutions to their problems. Before most can receive direct financial assistance, we require them to enroll in a series of financial management classes to learn the basics of budgeting and money management. Our goal is to help them remove themselves from dependence on subsidies and to show them how to participate in their own recovery from financial difficulty. The success of the financial management classes has led to their expansion to other agencies elsewhere in the metro area. Our decision to expand the classes we offer to include employment training and counseling has proven successful as well, assisting many of our clients in securing gainful employment.
