The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.

Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by love for God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in his name without discrimination.

Description:
In Metro Atlanta alone, The Salvation Army owns and operates a homeless shelter for men, women and children, four Boys & Girls Clubs for disadvantaged youth, a senior citizens facility for individuals who are unable to afford traditional nursing homes, one of the most successful drug and addiction rehabilitation facilities in Georgia, nine Family Emergency Service centers to prevent homelessness and operate our food pantries, nine Corps community centers dedicated to family ministry and multiple Disaster Emergency Response Teams that stand ready at a moments notice. The largest of our programs in the Christmas Assistance program called Angel Tree which assisted over 19,000 people in Metro Atlanta with food vouchers for a Christmas dinner and gifts for needy children under the age of 12!

As an organization we try to touch as many people in need as possible. This is where volunteers come in!

The Salvation Army is one of the largest non-profits in the world. However, there is much to be done right here at home in Atlanta and we need your help to reach as many people as possible.

History:
The Salvation Army began in Georgia in 1890.

The Salvation Army in Atlanta grew slowly, and by the end of January 1891, The Salvation Army had enlisted a support staff of thirty individuals. On April 12, 1891, the second official facility opened in Augusta, Georgia.

By 1895 the mission was gaining ground. Columbus opened in 1895, Rome in 1897, Macon in 1899 and Brunswick and Savannah in 1900. Other cities followed. In the years to come The Salvation Army would continue to open facilities in underserved communities to address the issues of those in need.

Atlanta

Atlanta's central location and economic strength made it a perfect location for The Salvation Army's Divisional and Territorial Headquarters.
In 1986, a professional survey of 1,100 civic leaders, clergy and agency executives in Georgia revealed that 95 percent thought The Salvation Army had an "excellent" or "good" reputation in Georgia. Popular, respected and well supported, the Georgia division will continue to grow in number and service well into the new millennium.
