The Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY is a multi-purpose community center located on the East Side of Buffalo. The Matt Urban Center's mission is to provide progragms that enhance the quality of life, preserve neighborhoods, and encourage economic development.
Description:
The Matt Urban Center serves more than 5,000 clients annually, not including information and referral to other services. The Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood and surrounding community that we serve is located in a very high crime and poverty stricken area. Our youth department provides comprehensive recreational and educational opportunities to over 486 area youth. These programs and services offer positive alternatives for at-risk youth ranging from pre-school to teen. Case management services are provided to 786 elderly citizens. Senior citizens are provided with van service for medical appointments and transportation for banking, shopping, etc.. We also have weekly arts and crafts classes for seniors. Our housing department includes direct housing services, a real estate services, weatherization services, homebuyers assistance programs, and management of a 32 units apartment building for senior citizens, and a 20 unit apartment building for refugees. Our two satellite locations at 129 Lewis Street and 385 Paderewski Drive also have food pantries for the community.
History:
The Polish Community Center of Buffalo, Inc., was established in 1976 as a multi-purpose community center, and in housed in the historic Dom Polski Building, located at 1081 Broadway, in the heart of Buffalo's East Side and the Broadway-Fillmore community. In 2000, the PCCB officially changed its name to the "Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY" and rededicated its mission to serve the needs of the diverse surrounding community under a new corporate identity. By taking the name of Lt. Col. Matt Urban, the PCCB paid honor to the most decorated war veteran in American history, who was born and raised in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood we serve. For more than 31 years, the Matt Urban Center has provided activities and programs that serve families and individuals of all ages, from pre-school through seniors. Extensive services and programs are provided in three community locations: 1081 Broadway, Polonia Youth Hall located at 385 Paderewski Drive, and T.J. Dulski Community Center, located at 129 Lewis Street.
