Mission Project Flight is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting literacy in children and caregivers through school and family literacy initiatives. It works collaboratively with practitioners, schools, community organizations and businesses locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally to achieve its objectives. Vision Every child will have a book and be able to read it at grade level. Each of these children will live in a literate environment. Literacy will be an entree out of poverty.
Description:
We accomplish our mission for children and families by placing books in the hands of children, establishing programs to support a home literate environment, and promoting interactive reading within families. We accomplish our mission for practitioners by: pioneering and developing educational literacy programs; partnering with schools and community organizations; establishing and supporting libraries in schools and community organizations; employing a systematic framework for advocacy, communication, networking on literacy issues locally, statewide, nationally and internationally; providing educational resources and consulting services to schools and their providers; providing a BookBank; maintaining the Western New York Family Literacy Consortium; and providing programs and resources for at-risk children.
History:
Since 1994, Project Flight has been dedicated to the cause of promoting literacy in children from pre-K right through high school. We've done so, most notably, by getting books in the hands of kids who need them through our BookBank. In fact, we've delivered more than 2 million books to children over the years. Beyond providing books, we also offer tools to get the most out of them. We provide tutoring to students and training to both educators and parents to help increase reading performance in children. It's our instruction of future teachers that sets us apart from other like agencies. And we work with schools and community organizations on innovative educational strategies, grants, research, and evaluation - all with the goal of increasing literacy levels.
