The Old 1st Ward Community Center serves seniors, families and youth in the southwest section of Buffalo, the Buffalo River Industrial Neighborhood. n the shadow of the grain elevators, we are the heart of a close knit community.
Description:
Senior lunch is served daily, with trips and activities throughout the week. The senior van transports residents to shopping and medical appointments.
Kid's Cafe opens at 2:30 pm, serving 30-50 children a nutritious meal, along with recreation, ceramics, arts & crafts and homework help. Tutoring and gym activities continue to 9 pm, with a computer room and internet access available.
Housing programs include a 16-unit senior apartment, new construction, rehab loans, homebuyer assistance and homeowner programs, along with community and economic development activities. Our goal is to reinforce the community through strong families and individuals, with safe streets for all.
History:
The Old 1st Ward Community Association has been serving this community for over 30 years. Originally settled by Irish immigrants employed at the waterfront, the Ward is still a close and unique community. Today, many of the same families remain in the community, and many more have close ties to the "old neighborhood." At the Old First Ward Community Center, we honor the strong Irish heritage and foster new ideas to strengthen the community.
