To preserve, protect and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Dr. Victor Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, and to carry out a comprehensive program of interpretive, education and information services which leads the public to a better understanding, appreciation and sense of responsibility for the environment.

Description:
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) operates a 292-acre complex of forests, ponds and wetlands in suburban Cheektowaga. DEC offers a variety of environmental education programs for youth, adults, school groups and organizations related to nature. Volunteers assist with tours, trail maintenance, frogwatch research, and outreach. Volunteer opportunities exist both on and off the site. Please note: If you are under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian is required to volunteer with you for any of the volunteer positions. For more information about our current volunteer positions, please go to our website at www.dec.state.ny.us/website/reg9/reinstein/volprog.html

History:
The Estate of Dr. Victor Reinstein donated the property to New York State DEC in 1986. In 2001 DEC created a volunteer program to develop a pool of people to assist with educational programs, conservation and research efforts at the Woods. In 2003, a group of volunteers created a non-profit group, Friends of Reinstein Nature Preserve, to support the educational efforts at Reinstein Woods.
