The mission of Concerned Ecumenical Ministry (CEM) is provide effective and progressive human services with people in Western New York through collaborative efforts with faith communities, community organizations, other similar organizations and governmental agencies.

Description:
CEM operates and variety of programs. They include the Loaves & Fishes Dining Room and the Potter's Pantry and Family Resource Center. Through these two programs we provide access to emergency food for nearly 3000 people each month. The Senior Case Management department provides assistance to homebound seniors, enabling them to stay within their community. CEM also provides recreational activities and hot meals to seniors visiting the Senior Activity Center. In addition, we work with other centers and senior housing buildings to connect seniors with one another. The STAR after school program provides child care, homework help, recreational activities, and learning opportunities for school aged children.

History:
CEM was started by clergy and lay persons from congregations on Buffalo's west side in 1967. They decided to coordinate their programs for children one summer rather than trying to do everything on their own. After the success of that first summer, they tried other things together, including worship, fund-raising, and activities for seniors, teens, and children.

In 1985 CEM moved into the Crane-Cutting Community Center on Lafayette Avenue, the former Lafayette Baptist Church. Today CEM's membership includes 16 congregations and the D'Youville Campus Ministry. The operation of the programs continues to rely on volunteers along with CEM's paid staff.
