CEPA is the only not-for-profit arts center in Western New York devoted to photography and the digital arts. CEPA provides a context for understanding the aesthetic, cultural, and political intersections of photo-related art as it is produced in our diverse society.
Description:
Located in the historic Market Arcade Complex in the heart of Buffalo's Theater District, CEPA functions as a public research and education center for the exploration of new technologies in the visual arts. CEPA presents works by emergent and established visual artists, and is committed to supporting projects from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in cultural spaces.
History:
CEPA Gallery was founded in May 1974 by graduate students from the University at Buffalo and incorporated as the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Art. It was established during the alternative arts space movement to serve as a community darkroom and exhibition space. Active in Buffalo and Erie County for more than 30 years, CEPA Gallery has preserved its foundation as an artist-run space creating and building a supportive environment for artists. Throughout its history, CEPA has evolved to reflect the creative priorities of working artists and has grown to accommodate the educational and social needs of Western New York's diverse community. CEPA remains dedicated to the photo-related and electronic arts and has developed the programs and opportunities to provide working artists, urban youth, and individuals with the necessary programs and facilities for the production and reception of contemporary visual art.
