The Alzheimer's Association, WNY Chapter is dedicated to providing assistance to persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, their families and caregivers and to supporting research into the cause, prevention, treatment and cure of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
Description:
The Chapter strives to meet the needs of an ever-expanding population. We serve persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, their families and caregivers throughout the eight counties of Western New York. A professional staff and core of volunteers provide support, educational programs and assistance to family members and raise funds to support and enhance the programming. Volunteer opportunities range from participating in one-time events to on-going involvement. The main office located in Williamsville houses a lending library and training facilities. In addition, the chapter has a tri-county satellite office in Olean.
History:
In 1981, two caregivers placed a classified advertisement in a suburban Buffalo newspaper inquiring if anyone other than themselves was coping with Alzheimer's disease. Out of the resulting meeting grew what has become the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, serving the counties of Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua. Currently there are more than 47,000 people diagnosed with the disease who live in this area.
