Our mission is to provide or obtain services for people with developmental disabilities and their families in Western New York which will:
Assist in achieving their highest level of independent living
Enable their fullest participation in society
Ensure that their civil and human rights are protected; and
Promote their ability to be productive, contributing members of the community.
Description:
Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled provides a variety of valuable services to people with developmental disabilities. We offer over 25 programs and serve more than 1500 people each year. Our services include Service Coordination, Habilitation Services and Housing and Shelter Services. All of our programs are designed to assist individuals with developmental disabilities reach their highest level of independence possible.
In our Service Coordination Program, staff link consumers with services that benefit the entire family. Specialized assistance is available for Parents, Seniors, individuals with a dual diagnosis, and individuals with criminal backgrounds or alcohol/drug abuse issues.
In our Residential Program, emergency shelters and long-term residential housing is available. Some of our houses are specialized to serve young adults, seniors, and individuals with a dual diagnosis. On-site staff teach daily living skills and assist residents in reaching personal goals.
In our Habilitation Services Program consumers work on learning a variety of skills. The Supported Employment Program provides job opportunities and on-the-job coaching. Continuing Education classes are available. Several day habilitation programs provide participants with meaningful activities and opportunities to interact with their community.
History:
Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled was established as an independent agency in 1989. At that time, the Agency was based in a rented storefront building on Hertel Avenue and provided case management services and Emergency Shelter. Now Community Services offers four administrative sites strategically located in Downtown Buffalo, Kenmore, Lackawanna and Buffalo East Side. The Agency offers two emergency shelters, a Safe House, and 12 residential sites scattered throughout Erie County. Community Services provides Service Coordination, Habilitation Services, Housing and Shelter Services.
