First Hand Learning Inc. (FHL) is a nonpofit Buffalo based organization founded in 1998 to promote learning from direct experience, inquiry - based teaching, and collaboration between formal and informal teaching organizations. FHL works closely with schools, community- based organizations, cultural institutions, and the university community to support efforts to engage learners in self - directed scientific investigation. The primary mission of FHL is to promote learning through direct experience.

Description:
Science Firsthand is a pilot project of First Hand Learning, supported by the National Science Foundation. This is the program for which we are seeking volunteers. SFH develops partnershps between committed adult mentors and young people who will benefit from an adult relationship and a fresh way of learning. Together they explore the natural urban landscape in their neighborhoods. As they ask questions, discuss solutions and share discoveries, foundations for relationships and knowledge are built. Mentors meet with students at a designated community center which hosts the Science Firsthand program. Support is provided by Learning Firsthand staff and professional scientists.

History:
Firsthand Learning was founded in 1998 by Peter Dow to foster and promote learning trough experience. They have been housed in the TriMain Center in Buffalo's Masten district since that time. FHL now provides science materials and curriculum to the BPS district and Object Lessons to other school districts and organizations. Science Firsthand began in 2005, as a program model for out of school learning, through a grant from the NSF.
