MAP's mission is to improve the safety and security of neighborhoods and their physical conditions, improve the sense of community by increasing resident participation and improve the economic and social well-being of individuals and families in the area.
Description:
MAP currently runs two core programs: Growing Green, a youth entrepreneurial program which trains and builds garden-based businesses with neighborhood youth and trains them in sustainable urban agriculture and food systems issues; and, Food Ventures a micro enterprise development program that helps low-income people start food-based businesses. Food Ventures provides business training and technical assistance, access to a licensed commercial kitchen and a micro-loan fund.
History:
MAP began organizing in 1992 around issues of the lack of healthy alternatives for neighborhood youth. In 1994, MAP secured over $500,000 and organized over 600 volunteers to build a playground in just over 5 days. Following this success, MAP hired its' first staff person and was incorporated in 2000. Since then MAP has designed programs aimed at revitalizing our neighborhoods through the vehicles of food, gardening and economic development.
