Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Buffalo and Niagara River watersheds.

Description:
Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper seek to improve public access along our local rivers and tributaries, restore the ecological health of the Buffalo and Niagara River ecosystems, express and celebrate the cultural and historic fabric of the area, support sustainable development of the regional economy, and encourage community awareness and stewardship of our rivers.

Volunteer opportunities include our twice-yearly shoreline cleanups and tree plantings, for which we seek volunteers to beautify our community and environment at over 30 parks and natural areas along waterways throughout the region. We are also seeking Riverwatch Captains to actively monitor stretches of waterway and participate in free training workshops to increase their understanding of waterway issues.

History:
Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper was established in 1989 as a citizens' advocacy group when the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers were internationally identified as Great Lakes Areas of Concern. Riverkeeper is now the Buffalo River Remedial Action Plan Coordinator, and has developed an active volunteer base of over 70 Riverwatch Captains monitoring 20 local waterways.
