The Buffalo Audubon Society promotes an appreciation of the natural world through education, advocacy, conservation, and preservation.

Description:
The Society delivers interpretive programs throughout Western NY, including six preserves totaling more than 1,000 acres owned by the Society. Among the largest of these is the 324-acre Beaver Meadow Audubon Center in Wyoming County which has a 8,400 sq. ft. Visitor / Interpretive Center with classrooms, meeting hall, library, dioramas, and wildlife collections maintained in interactive displays. The Visitor Center is fully handicapped accessible. Programming encompasses all aspects of natural history, environmental education, survival skills, and local Native American history. Festivals celebrating seasonal aspects of natural history are held throughout the year.

History:
Started as a preserve in 1951, Beaver Meadow became a public, outdoor environmental educational facility in the late 1960s, when Audubon volunteers began leading Buffalo city school children on guided "ecology tours". The popularity of these and other public programs led to the construction of a Visitor Center in 1974. Over the next quarter century, Beaver Meadow's educational programs grew to encompass more diverse, on-site programs, as well as numerous outreach programs. The growing audience led to the expansion of the Visitor Center in 2000, creating a top-notch educational facility that continues to develop new and exciting environmental education initiatives for all ages.
