To preserve, exhibit, interpret, develop, research, and make available collections of material culture, art, and research sources that relate to the history of the Town of Amherst and the Village of Williamsville and the impact of that history on today's culture.
Description:
The Amherst Museum is located on a 35 acre site adjacent to the historic Erie Canal. It includes 13 historic 19th century buildings all from Amherst, 22,650 sq.ft. administrative/exhibit building and additional support buildings. The museum is the repository for 35,000+ artifacts that include textiles, photographs and documents donated by Amherst residents.
History:
The museum was founded in 1971 and had an attendence of 35,000 in 2003. Annual special events are Scottish Festival, Harvest Festival, Family Christmas Tours, Quilt Show, children's programs,and workshops.
