LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Description:
LLS is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. LLS has dedicated itself to being one of the top-rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund our mission. LLS offers a wide variety of educational and patient services. The Society's Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter serves the counties of Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Columbia, Delaware, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, Pike, Schuykill, Susqeuhanna, Wayne and Wyoming. We are moving toward new horizons to provide hope to patients and their families. Our researchers are developing promising new therapies; our awareness programs are building public understanding and support for our mission; and our patient services offer help in highlighting the importance of our mission. The Society accomplishes these goals through a variety of service programs.
History:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which changed its name from the Leukemia Society of America in 2000 to reflect its commitment to curing all blood cancers, is proud to be playing a major role in the fight against leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. With the help of major fundraising campaigns, including Team In Training, the world's largest endurance sports training program, and Light The Night Walk, the Society has supported more than $550 million in research since its founding in 1949. The commitment to cutting-edge science has contributed to an unprecedented rise in survival rates for some blood cancers. The relative five-year survival rate for people with leukemia, for example, has tripled in the past 40 years.
