Berks County Intermediate Unit Child Care is committed to providing quality child care for Berks County families. We believe that children are to be treated as individuals with love and respect for their specific emotional, physical, cognitive and social needs.
Description:
Berks County Intermediate Unit Child Care is a program of the Berks County Intermediate Unit providing quality child care to more than 475 children in 13 state licensed child care facilities in Berks County. We collaborate with the Reading, Exeter, Conrad Weiser, Hamburg, Kutztown, Schuylkill Valley and Muhlenberg School Districts to operate 10 school age centers. Two kindergarten wrap programs serve children in the Kutztown and Muhlenberg School Districts. Toddler and preschool inclusion care is provided at two of our facilities in the Muhlenberg School District. At many of our sites, child care is provided from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, affording parents the peace of mind they seek as they pursue the daily business of living.
History:
Since the early 1970's,Berks County Intermediate Unit Child Care, known previously as Community Child Care, has been a leader in the childcare field. Responding to community needs, BCIU-CC has charted a course by providing infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age care. BCIU-CC also operates employer-sponsored centers.
In 1997, the Family Day Care Home Network was established, funded by a United Way rapid response grant to provide additional childcare spaces to those parents affected by Welfare Reform. The Network provided a "home-like" atmosphere for young children while allowing providers to leave the welfare rolls. Since 1996, BCIU-CC has worked closely with the Early Intervention Program, providing inclusive opportunities for all children. This collaboration, which also includes the Berks County Head Start Program, was formalized under the umbrella of the Early Childhood Education Project. Today, BCIU-CC is working to develop and incorporate preschool benchmarks based on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards into the preschool curriculum. The need to provide quality childcare in a changing world has and continues to be BCIU-CC's goal.
