Habitat for Humanity's goal is to eliminate poverty housing in Berks County by providing housing for low income families.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity provides new or rehabilitated housing for low income families. Our program requires 350 sweat equity hours, budget counseling and a desire from the family to partner with us. Families completing the program will purchase one of our houses at no interest which makes the mortgage payments more affordable for the family. Our program helps low income families realize the American dream of homeownership.
History:
The work of Habitat for Humanity has its roots in Koinonia Farm, Sumter County, Ga. In 1968, Millard Fuller and the late Clarence Jordan developed the idea of providing houses for the poor using Biblical economies. In 1973, Millard Fuller and his family tested the idea in Zaire, Africa. When the Fullers returned to the United States they founded Habitat for Humanity and continued to build and rehabilitate homes for the low income families of the United States. In the 1980's Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter became involved in Habitat for Humanity spending many volunteer hours helping Habitat. Reading-Berks Habitat for Humanity became an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in 1988. With the help of many volunteers we continue to build and rehabilitate homes for low income families in the Reading area.
