The Nolde Center provides a comprehensive environmental education program for schools and the public to increase environmental awareness, develop environmental knowledge, develop environmental problem solving and decision-making skills and take positive environmental action. The Center also provides a site for passive recreational experiences for the visiting public.

Description:
The Nolde Center encompasses 665 acres of deciduous and coniferous woods; three small streams;two ponds; connected by 11 miles of roads and trail which serve as a site for environmental education programming for students pre-school through grade 12, teacher training and public programming. Approximately 20,000 people are involved in the Center's programming on and off-site each year. An additional 80,000 visitors hike, run, birdwatch, photograph and enjoy other passive recreational activities at the Center each year.

History:
The area which is now Nolde Forest was purchased by Jacob Nolde around the turn of the century. Under his guidance thousands of coniferous trees were planted on old eroded fields. His son, Hans, built the mansion that currently serves as the Center's office in 1927-8. After Hans death, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acquired the property in 1966. In cooperation with the Berks County Intermediate Unit the Center began programs in 1970. Since that time the Center has served hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and the public through a variety of programs on and off-site.
