Description:
Shady Hollow Assisted Riding (SHAR)provides an equine program where individuals of all ages, disabilities and conditions can utilize therapeutic riding and other equine activities to improve flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Individuals with mental or emotional disabilities can form unique relationships with the horses that lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. Being on horseback also provides a sense of independence for the rider. It takes approx. 6 volunteers per rider to effectively hold a lesson. We need volunteers as a horse leader, the person who retains control of the horse during a lesson; a side-walker, a person who assists the rider during the lesson; and also a spotter, who will assist the group of volunteers and/or rider during the lesson.
History:
Our program has been in operation since 1997 and was incorporated in 1998.
