Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. In partnership with committed adults, girls involved in Girl Scouting develop qualities that will serve them all their lives-like strong values, a social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
Description:
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania serves more than 50,000 girls and 17,000 adults throughout our nine-county jurisdiction (which includes all of Berks County as well as Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, and Philadelphia counties). Girl Scouts is Where Girls Grow Strong. We believe Every Girl, Everywhere should have the opportunity to learn about herself, her community, and the world around her in a safe, accepting, and nurturing environment. Today's Girl Scouts are involved in community service projects, learning about the sciences (ranging from astronomy to zoology), participating in the arts, playing sports, as well as exploring potential careers and honing their leadership skills. The women and men who guide girls ages 5-17 through these varied and exciting learning experiences are caring, committed adults who are given training, materials, and support by the Council.
History:
Girl Scouts of the USA began on March 12, 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low declared she had "something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world!" Three years later, the first Girl Scout troop in Berks County was formed. Camp Mosey Wood was established in 1939 and Camp Wood Haven in 1954. On May 1, 2007, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania was born from a merger of 3 sister councils: Girl Scouts-Great Valley Council (which served Berks & the Lehigh Valley), Freedom Valley, and Southeastern Pennsylvania.
