SnowStoppers is a Diakon Volunteer Home Care program funded by the Berks County Office of Aging. Our program seeks to match volunteers with seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to clear snow around their homes.
Description:
Volunteering for as little as a few hours per month can help seniors to avoid municipal fines, allow visiting nurses to provide care, and help people live independently, avoiding long-term care placement. Applications may be obtained by calling 1-800-366-0929 or by downloading forms from our website at www.diakon.org/snowstoppers. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
History:
Diakon Volunteer Home Care was first organized in the western part of Berks County in 1986 as an ecumenical outreach ministry of The Lutheran Home at Topton. Volunteers were recruited from area churches and trained to help others with short-term needs. Over the years, additional teams have been organized to create a county-wide program of service.
Snow Stoppers was developed in 2005 in response to the needs of seniors and people with disabilities for snow removal assistance at no cost. A diverse group of volunteers, including students, professionals, families, and church members, work together to achieve this goal.
