Diakon's mission statement is as follows: "In response to God's love in Jesus Christ, Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries will demonstrate God's command to love the neighbor through acts of service."
Description:
Diakon Volunteer Home Care (DVHC) offers opportunities to provide non-professional, non-medial assistance to people of any age living independently in the community. Volunteers may serve as often or as little as they wish. Volunteer opportunities include: transportation, companion visiting & respite, grocery shopping & errands, minor repairs & outdoor chores, meal preparation & light housekeeping, finance/forms/letter writing, and telephone reassurance. Services are meant to be short-term, temporary, or intermittent. Volunteers receive training/orientation, excess liability insurance and are offered mileage reimbursement.
History:
DVHC was first organized in the western part of Berks County in 1986 as an ecumenical outreach ministry of The Lutheran Home at Topton. Volunteers were recruited from area churches and trained to help others with short-term needs. Additional teams have since been organized to create a county-wide program of service.
