Mission Statement: The Second Mile challenges young people to achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing opportunities for them to develop positive life skills and self-esteem as well as providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth.

Description:
The Second Mile provides a network of prevention, early intervention, and community-based child development programs and services that are provided free to school-aged children. It's programs range in scope from those providing exposure to strategies and skills effective in addressing problems of normal development encountered by children in the mainstream to those for children who have been battered and abused, lack parental encouragement and role modeling, or who lack the skills necessary to cope with the trauma and crisis confronting their families. Each program focuses on instilling a sense of personal responsibility and preparation for the future in the youngsters. The Second Mile's programs reach out to our most important resource, our children, and teach those children how they can make a difference in their own lives and in their communities. The Second Mile provides youngsters with a pathway to overcome the obstacles or trauma confronting them and leads them to a future of promise and possibility.

History:
The Second Mile was founded by Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State Defensive Coordinator. Through his leadership and the support of many community members, the organization, which was founded and incorporated in 1977, began program operations in 1982. Initially, program services were provided to 45 children in the State College area. Today, more than 200,000 children participate in nine programs. Hundreds of teachers, school counselors, human service professionals and families refer children to these programs annually. In 1988 we opened our second office - located in Harrisburg and serving the nine counties (including Berks) that make up the Southcentral Region. A third office opened in 2004. This office is located in King of Prussia and serves Pennsylvania's Southeast Region.
