The Kip Kids Kamp is an all-day camp that is dedicated to offering academic assessment and tutoring in math, reading and writing in order to help students (ages 6 -12) maintain and increase their skills in these areas over the summer. Character education, social skills training and opportunities to practice these skills are provided in order to assist students in developing coping strategies that will enable them to improve academic skills as well as the ability to relate to others in positive, reciprocal and meaningful ways in a diverse world.
Description:
The Knowledge is Power (KIP) Tutoring Program was developed under the Family Ministries Outreach program of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in order to provide tutoring and social skills training for any student in the community who may be experiencing academic, emotional or behavioral challenges in school and at home. Family involvement, consultation and advocacy with school staff, and individual and small group tutoring and activities designed to enhance positive mental health are offered. Adult staff members and volunteers with the KIP Tutoring Program have backgrounds in teaching, school psychology, preschool and day care management and business and are dedicated to providing a variety of activities that increase hope, academic involvement and relationship-building skills for students and families. The KIP program represents a positive, multi-generational and skill-specific approach to strengthening family relationships and educational success for students while celebrating individual and unique qualities and diverse backgrounds, needs and strengths.
History:
The Mt. Calvary Baptist Church is a dynamic, predominantly African-American church with a rich history in community and family involvement. The pastor, Dr. Felix G. Williams, III, has solid roots in the community as well as a broad world-view that includes living your faith through outreach and community service. The congregation includes a diverse group of individuals and families with professional training, work skills, life experiences, talents and personality characteristics that are bonded together to identify problems in the church family and community-at-large that have the potential to be solved through attention to individual situations, family relationships and community awareness. Mt. Calvary believes that if we are to be Christ-like in our interactions with others, then we can not ignore the pain...nor the potential...that exists in all of us. Our responsibility as believers is to share the resources that we have, whether they be monetary, talents, skills, time, interests, or simply a desire to be involved in something larger than ourselves. We believe that by focusing on our families and children through meaningful activities that have a positive impact on their daily challenges, they will be better able to access their strengths and their potential to seek solutions and create opportunities to be their most creative selves.
