The Domestic Violence Prevention Board (DVPB) is Fayette County's local coordinating council on family violence. The mission of the DVPB is to promote safe and healthy individuals and families through the prevention of interpersonal and family violence. The DVPB is not a direct service agency, though we do offer information and referral to all who contact us.

Description:
The DVPB promotes safe and healthy families and the prevention of violence through two primary avenues: system coordination and public awareness and education.
System Coordination:
Fayette County has created a network of services and protections that involve a wide variety of professionals who address family and interpersonal violence. While each of these agencies provides a piece of the puzzle in the form of specific services to address family and interpersonal violence, the DVPB looks at the whole picture to ensure that, when the pieces are fit together, the community provides a comprehensive network of services and protections. The DVPB provides a forum for everyone to coordinate their efforts, identify and address problems/gaps in the system, and create collaborative projects.
Public Awareness and Education:
The DVPB sponsors forums, workshops and a variety of events for the general public and community groups, and training for a variety of professionals to address family and interpersonal violence. The DVPB also develops and distributes public awareness materials including resource guides, brochures and help cards. In addition, the DVPB sponsors a weekly email update during legislative sessions to inform anyone interested of the progress of bills affecting family and interpersonal violence.

History:
The DVPB was created by ordinance in 1986 in response to a recommendation by the United Way Domestic Violence Workgroup that a council be formed to coordinate the efforts of the various agencies involved in addressing family and interpersonal violence in Fayette County. The DVPB has since become a model for the state, inspiring the creation of similar groups in many communities. The blueprint for coordinating councils in Kentucky, the "Model Protocol for Local Coordinating Councils on Domestic Violence" published by the Governor's Office in 1996 and 2000, was based on the DVPB. After 21 years, the DVPB remains a vibrant organization providing a critical function in family and interpersonal violence prevention.
