Last updated on December 15, 2008

Project Read's mission is to assist residents of Madison County, KY who are 16 years of age or older improve their literacy skills (reading and math) in order to become more effective and productive citizens.

Description:
The mission of Project Read is accomplished through individualized one-on-one and small group tutoring and related services that encourage individual and family literacy. These services are available to adult basic literacy clients; and, through an ESL program, to immigrant adults. Community volunters are recruited and trained as tutors to use methods of instruction approved by ProLiteracy America and materials provided by Project Read. Students have the opportunity to use state of the art equipment, such as computers and compatible software, as they develop skills to enter the information age. Student progress is monitored and evaluated on a regular basis.

History:
Project Read was organized in 1985 in response to needs recognized by interested Madison County citizens. Throughout the organization's 22 year existence, hundreds of individuals have been helped to improve their literacy skills. Many have gone on to achieve a GED.

In recent years, Project Read has expanded its efforts and has accepted clients with more diversified needs (i.e., math, ESL and computer skills). Students whose reading level is below 6.0 can be accepted as clients. Students who reach that level and those who come to Project Read with a reading level of 6.0 or higher are referred to a formal advanced adult literacy program that provides GED preparation.
