The mission of the program is to provide quality home-based volunteer caregiving services to frail older adults and other older adults who are homebound due to chronic illness or disability. The goal is to help older adults maintain their independence and dignity and stay at home as long as possible. The mission is supported by a partnership of local faith groups, aging and caregiving organizations, and professionals.
Description:
Faith in Action: Elder Outreach is an interfaith coalition that serves older adults and their families in the Lexington/Fayette County area. Services are free. We rely on donations, in-kind gifts, and volunteers to sustain our program. Volunteers are the heart of the program and are trained to provide needed caregiving services. These services include respite care, support for family caregivers, and assistance with a variety of daily living needs including transportation to medical appointments, help with shopping, home repairs, delivery of meals, telephone reassurance calls, and friendly visits and companionship. Volunteers are best described as good neighbors or friends.
History:
Faith in Action: Elder Outreach began in 2003 when a group of professionals and volunteers from 30 faith groups came to together with a common vision of creating a program that would provide non-discrimantory volunteer services to older adults in Lexington. In April 2004, with eight volunteers we began providing services to older adults to help them maintain their independence and dignity to continue living in their home. Currently we have more than 70 volunteers providing services to older adults all over Fayette County.
