The Lexington-Fayette Health Department is an independent agency under the Kentucky Revised statues charged with the responsibility for "public health" of Lexington Fayette County.
Description:
One of the major concerns of the Health Department is the continuing problem of disposing of sewage in a safe & sanitary manner. The Health Dept. also has the responsibility of meeting the thealth services needs of the commuity which are not being met by other institutions. To meet and serve the needs of Fayette County: The Health Department operates medical and environmental programs: Tuberculosis, Veneral Disease, Food Handlers, School Bus Drivers, Home Nursing Service, School Health, Restuarant Inspections, Housing Inspections, Rabies Control, Waste Inspection, Consumer Protections.
History:
1902-Board of Health Organized; 1904-Health Dept. in City Building & first Board of Health for City of Lexington; 1910-Board of Health for Fayette County; 1938-Merger of city & county Board of Health (medical society & state Board of Health); 1940-New Building at North Upper dedicated; 1965-New Building at 330 Waller Avenue dedicated; 8/30/1976-Groundbreaking-New building of Newtown Pike; 1978-October - open for business and dedication.
