The mission of the Manchester Center is to enrich the lives in our neighborhood through educational, recreational, and social activities.
Description:
The Manchester Center is a full-service community center located one mile west of downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Our mission is "to enrich the lives in our neighborhood through educational, recreational, and social activities." Anyone from the Lexington area is eligible to participate in our programs, but priority is given to those living in Irishtown, Speile Heights, Davistown, Smithtown, and Thompson Road Addition. The main population we serve is very diverse, very poor, and isolated from the rest of the city. Many residents, and their families, have lived in the area for over twenty years, and approximately half earn an annual income of less then $17,000. Our Center provides access to services, events, and information. We offer programs in the areas of youth development and social services, conduct various community events, and provide a full-day, year-round, licensed preschool.
History:
The Manchester Center was originally established as a library in 1940 for the Irishtown community. On July 1, 1943, the Manchester Center Library was incorporated. Officially becoming The Manchester Center, Inc. in January of 1952, the Center has since expanded its services and programs and is now a full-service community center.
