Our mission is to work with established agencies in Georgetown and Scott County to promote prevention and education efforts addressing substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs)thereby resulting in safe and healthy lifestyles for the community.
Description:
We work together with local agencies and government to provide proven prevention and intervention activities and educational opportunities on issues relating to substance abuse. Educational and awareness activities include Developing Capable People, Red Ribbon Week, New Driver Project, distribution of anti-drug materials at health fairs, community workshops and public forums. Intervention and prevention activities include Project ALERT, Positive Action, Prom Breakfast and support for Project Graduation and DARE.
History:
Scott Countians Against Drugs originated in 1983 from a a town meeting of concerned citizens who subsequently dedicated themselves to developing a comprehensive drug and alcohol abuse prevention and education program for the community of Georgetown/Scott County. Over the years, SCAD has been instrumental in bringing D.A.R.E. to Scott County, establishing a Teen Center and in encouraging the establishment of an alternative school for at-risk youth. In 1999 SCAD was awarded a Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) Grant. This grant allowed Georgetown/Scott County to broaden community involvement in drug prevention by creating a formal community coalition and by developing a comprehensive community prevention strategy. SCAD functions as both a catalyst and a coordinator for drug abuse education and prevention activities in Scott County.
