The mission of the Lexington YWCA is the empowerment of women and girls and the elimination of racism.
Description:
Cross Keys Center - Health and fitness, water and land aerobic classes, Afterschool and Summer Camp programs; Arnett Pritchett Place - Personal care home for elderly ladies; Spouse Abuse Center - Shelter for domestic violence victims, women and children; Phillis Wheatley Center - A community center that is located in a residential neighborhood that offers a variety of things such as meeting space, rentals and programs for children.
History:
Charter for the Lexington YWCA was granted in 1917 at Short and Upper streets and moved to the old Library building and also opened a cafeteria at Church and Market streets. Arnett Pritchett Place was established in 1935 at 320 South Broadway. Phillis Wheatley Center opened in 1940 at 402 North Upper Street. Spouse Abuse Center opened in 1979 at a confidential location.
